Jamba Juice is in!

That’s right folks the cool people from Jamba Juice here in Bend are gong to be waiting for you at the finish of the Horse Butte 10 miler. If you have done this race in the past you have seen them there handing out free smoothies to all the finishers. For those who are new to the event you can’t miss them, they are wearing banana costumes…and they have smoothies. I am so happy to partner with these guys again for some of the 2012 Superfit events. Next time you are craving a delicious fruity treat head over to the Bend Jamba Juice buy a smoothing and tell them thanks for supporting the local running scene here in Bend Oregon.

View from the start.

When I went to bed Saturday night I was going for a run Sunday come hell or high water. Need to start getting some miles in as there are some events coming up that would be more fun to do with a little running fitness under my belt.

I was envisioning a run out on the Horse Butte 10 Miler (HB10) course which I know well and is in amazing shape right now with our lack of winter here in Bend, Or. On my way out to the trailhead I decided to go somewhere that I haven’t run before to change things up. So headed out to the aid station on the HB10 and headed south across China Hat rd and hopped on the Arnold Ice Cave Trail. Had seen this one on the Adventure Map and have always wanted to check it out.

Trail starts out basically right from the road and is singletrack for the next 3 miles. I ran 3 out and back but the trail looks like it winds around and heads southwest to Bessie Butte and from there you could connect to the Horse Butte trails and make a big’ol loop out of it. I am guessing in the 20+ mile range and from what I saw today it is mostly singletrack. My plan is to get out there on the mountain bike and see exactly what is up with this potentially cool trail.

The surface itself is pretty typical for that area. On the narrow side with big clumps of grass close to the trail edge that is easy to catch a foot on. Not that it happened to me today… As for views heading out there are some cool shots east of the Pine Mt area but mostly it is sparse Ponderosa forest as you climb the very subtle inclines. Trail did have some patches of ice but they were not an issue as they were short. On the way back there are some cool views of the Mountains and the rolling landscape northeast of Bend.

Well this is going on long enough so I guess we should all get out there and explore new areas as it adds to the adventure and peaks some curiosity. Now get out there and run!

Cool view east from the trail.

Some things change while others stay the same

The race is called SD’s Down and Dirty Half and 10k and is replacing the Dirty 2nd Half. The courses will be the same as in 2011 with the only thing being different is the name. Hit the link above to check out the new logo which a select few will recognize from a while back.

Trails in December

It is snowing as I type. Finally. Had a great run out on the Horse Butte 10 miler course and it was in amazing shape. Weather forecast is for a return of some dry weather so the trail will likely firm back up so if you are in Bend, Or get out on the trails if time allows.

That was some grippy dirt.

On borrowed time

We are staring December in the face here in Central Oregon and have been enjoying some unseasonably warm and dry weather. Trails for the most part down low are in amazing shape especially considering the time of year. Being the seasoned Central Oregonian I know better than to think that this is going to last. Right now every day without snow and cold is a gift and we should all be taking full advantage. I am as excited as the next guy to strap on some skis and hit the mountains when the time comes but right now the trails are in such good shape and the snow cover up high is less than ideal so I have been trying to run and mountain bike as much as time allows.

The picture below is from a mtb ride this past Sunday (Nov 27th) on Horse Ridge trail system just east of Bend. Usually this is a hot spot in the winter as it tends to be clear and the lack of tree cover lets what winter sun is available in February warm you as best it can. I was amazed to find it completely clear and even a little on the dry side. So wherever you are I hope you are having fun outside and if you are in Oregon get out there as this can’t last forever.

Peace out, sd

A little past and present and a little future

A vet kicking ass

Happy Veterans Day everyone! This is hands down the earliest I have ever put out a upcoming schedule so this could be the year I get a teeny bit more organized on the communication front. It is also way late for a wrap up so balance ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. I look forward to seeing you all again and hopefully seeing some new faces at the races.

2011 was a great year and here at Superfit Productions things are already ramping up for 2012. Before talking too much about 2012 I would like to thank any and all who came out and participated, volunteered and cheered any of the events from the past year. Without these folks coming out races no matter where they are would never happen.

For 2012 we have largely the same schedule with a couple of changes. For the Flagline Trail Fest we are eliminating the shorter race courses from 2011. Going forward there will only be two options for the festival. Of course the 50k and a NEW half marathon called the High Alpine Half. The course will share the backside of the 50k course and will be a vast improvement in terrain, views, support, and just about every aspect when compared to the Bachelor Butte Half from 2011. Also the Dirty 2nd Half will be renamed to something else and be moved more to the end of the month of October to get out of the way of the event crazy end of September and first two weekends of October.

Other than that I may throw out some new races but they are still in the planning stage for right now but I am hopeful that they will become a reality so stay tuned for more info.
