When I went to bed Saturday night I was going for a run Sunday come hell or high water. Need to start getting some miles in as there are some events coming up that would be more fun to do with a little running fitness under my belt.

I was envisioning a run out on the Horse Butte 10 Miler (HB10) course which I know well and is in amazing shape right now with our lack of winter here in Bend, Or. On my way out to the trailhead I decided to go somewhere that I haven’t run before to change things up. So headed out to the aid station on the HB10 and headed south across China Hat rd and hopped on the Arnold Ice Cave Trail. Had seen this one on the Adventure Map and have always wanted to check it out.

Trail starts out basically right from the road and is singletrack for the next 3 miles. I ran 3 out and back but the trail looks like it winds around and heads southwest to Bessie Butte and from there you could connect to the Horse Butte trails and make a big’ol loop out of it. I am guessing in the 20+ mile range and from what I saw today it is mostly singletrack. My plan is to get out there on the mountain bike and see exactly what is up with this potentially cool trail.

The surface itself is pretty typical for that area. On the narrow side with big clumps of grass close to the trail edge that is easy to catch a foot on. Not that it happened to me today… As for views heading out there are some cool shots east of the Pine Mt area but mostly it is sparse Ponderosa forest as you climb the very subtle inclines. Trail did have some patches of ice but they were not an issue as they were short. On the way back there are some cool views of the Mountains and the rolling landscape northeast of Bend.

Well this is going on long enough so I guess we should all get out there and explore new areas as it adds to the adventure and peaks some curiosity. Now get out there and run!

Cool view east from the trail.
